Did you know that 50+ women are the largest demographic in the world right now? Did you know 50+ women have the largest buying power right now? Did you know recent research shows that the 55-to-64-year-old age group boasts the highest rate of entrepreneurship among Americans? How about this one, “Women aged 50-plus in the US control about three-quarters of the wealth – they may not own it, but they make the decisions and manage that wealth.”
Why am I mentioning this to you? Because our encore life or third act can be fantastic and badass. We are living on average 35 years longer than our great grandparents. That’s an entire second adult lifetime that’s been added to our lifespan. Women are making a new life and career in this third act.
We can choose to see aging as potential. Studies have shown that women over 50 are “less anxious, feel better about themselves, are less stressed and have more disposable income.” In the words of Betty Friedan “Aging is not lost on youth but a new stage of opportunity and strength.” There are twice as many women entrepreneurs over the age of 50 as there are under 25. Interesting right?
What can we do to make this third act or encore career more successful and badass? Here are a few things to consider:
Mindset Is Everything
You’ve probably heard the words change your mindset, change your life. Never have truer words been spoken. Sophia Loren said it perfectly “There is a fountain of youth: it’s in your mind, your talents, the creativity you bring to your life and the lives of people you love. When you learn to tap this source, you will truly have defeated age.”
Love yourself and show your love for others. It makes us happier to make others happy. That’s the bottom line. So show it and love the shit out of yourself and others. That’s powerful and empowering.
Your body, take care of it! We are never too old to take care of ourselves or to start. Our body is our home and it’s the only one we’re going to get. If you are 50 and could live another 35 years? That’s plenty of time to start new habits. We know when we take care of our bodies, we feel more positive, have more energy and self confidence. As the saying goes, there’s no time like the present to start.
Let go of past regrets. “Never be a prisoner of your past. It’s just a lesson, not a life sentence.” Forgive and come to peace with all that stuff in your past. This is difficult but when you think about it, it’s time to let it go. Move into the third act without those burdens.
Quit whining and get into motion. Studies show there is greater stress in the not doing than the doing. “When you get into motion, a problem becomes an opportunity.” Getting into motion mentally and physically decreases the stress, makes us happier, more positive and creates opportunities we did not see before.
As much as I love to dance, I know I will not become a world class dancer no matter how hard I try or how positive I am. However, I can take some lessons and have a great time. The bottom line is whatever you are going out to do, try your best, don’t stress, and have some fun. It’ll be fine.
See this time as an opportunity to step into your own power and become all you can be. We are living longer and healthier than ever before. We have an old school wisdom that only comes with experience and age. More and more women are redefining themselves in their third act. Rise up and be badass.
